#CATALOG OF SHADOWS

One woman,
seven archetypes.

In both editions of #catalog of shadows there is a very strong penchant for fiction.
A focus on the inevitable repressiveness built into cultural representations of women.

‘universal types
as you see them everywhere,
tragi-comic sketches of
universal human troubles.
an exaggerated mirror on society.’

Delving into gender themes and 'the emotional software' of humans.
Categorising our emotional equipment for our social functioning, capturing the subjective experience investigating mechanisms. A 100% committed through shape and energy in search of the essence of character. It is a zooming-in, a magnification of attitudes, behaviour, in a grotesque manner... incorporated in the choreography.

 research focus: rolemodels and archetypes

’Investigating the relationship between the portrayal of humans in contemporary visual culture and how people act and move in private situations. Deeply rooted role models and archetypes, the merging of irreconcilable identities. The mother, the activist, the hero, the combatant... All kinds of gender stereotypes keep coming back in the works.’

Catalog of shadows I is inspired by Stabat Mater (the suffering of Mary). Examining identity and motherhood. In a series of life-size fantasy-like film portraits with archetypal angles, the concept includes seven portraits, seven figures with archetypal characteristics, positioned side by side. Within a photographic frame and each with an interior monologue performed by the same Swedish actress Ulrika Kinn-Svensson. The actions and texts have roots in her ‘stage characters’ of trash performances between 2001-2012.

’... this idea identity can be chosen’, a common thread throughout the concept of Docseries. It’s mainly a focus on the many roles we take on and the physical extensions we use for them. How the outside world influences our inner being and how our body reaches the outside world... She is not one person, she is many people, a single character inhabiting multiple identities. It’s a sort of experiment with fusion of incompatible identities. Using clichés, magnification of daily actions, the body as the portal of our 'self', an intermediary to the outside world.

Images that contain fantasy or make-believe elements / enchanted settings - can include forests, castles, water or kingdoms. Impregnated with magical elements.

Visually we’re aiming for a sort of Disney meets 3D postcards’. Mannequin-like figures with hard colours in the background, a castle, black ravens moving in an environment, like membranes, that keep changing.

research focus: transformation / morphing symbolism

Catalog of shadows II evolves out of a preliminary work of building a reservoir of images and sounds to draw from. Samples of statue-like structures, the construction of a modular database.

Manifesting between photo and film dynamics, there are references to 80s video in terms of texture and imagery with grain, a bit monochrome, but also hard. Image manipulation using plastic, techno colors, rainbow stripes. Thin visual layers on top of each other, layers that are transparent but fade away and back again. Figures detached from their background.

A pastel color palette with neon and shades of yellow. The images are created from faded colors, not just pin-sharp images. Colours running out a bit that wobbling.

There is some graphic style/lettering experimentation to draw from. Working with these text fragments; Text is sometimes graphically or spoken, manipulated and/or edited into sound.
